Chinese Magnolia Vine 'SADOVA NO. 1'

Chinese magnolia vine 'Sadova No. 1' is a self-fertile, high-yielding variety. The ripe fruits contain organic acids, vitamin C, essential oils, carbohydrates and the tonic substances schisandrin and schisandrol. The berries are used to make syrups, jams, preserves and kissel. The plant is valued both for its edible berries and its ornamental growth. This vigorous climbing vine can reach about 6–8 m tall when given support, making it ideal for covering pergolas, fences, screens and other vertical structures. The variety comes from Ukrainian breeding and crops well even when grown as a single plant.

The plant grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, in partial shade or shade. It flowers in June, and the red berries, which ripen in decorative clusters, are usually picked in September. The variety is frost-resistant and suitable for growing in our climate.
